I think about that all the time, how I tossed you that bread. I should have gone to you. I should have just gone out, in the rain and given it to you… I remember the first time I saw you. Your hair was in two braids, instead of one and I remember when you sang in music assembly. The teacher said, ‘Who knows the valley song?’ And your hand shot straight up. After that, I watched you going home everyday. Everyday.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Peeta extend his hand. I look at him, unsure. “One more time? For the audience?” he says. His voice isn’t angry. It’s hollow, which is worse. Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me.
I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.
